  1. What do customers need to know about Provence Rose and why do grapes grow so well in the AOP Côtes de Provence appellation?

First of all, Provence is France’s very first wine region. The grapevines were introduced by the Phoceans over 2,600 years ago when Marseille was founded. Today, it is the most famous region for Rosé wines thanks to its unique terroir perfectly suited to produce such wines. Its patchwork of soils and various exposures contribute to good development of the vines whilst the perfect Mediterranean climate (hot, dry summers and mild winters) along with a good diurnal temperatures favour the grapes’ maturity development. The resulting rosé wines are often blends from several grape varieties that are mainly vinified through direct press; producing elegant and supple wines.

The AOP Côtes de Provence is the largest AOC in the region. Thanks to its size, one will find many differences in climate, altitude of vineyards, soils and rainfall. For instance, there can be up to a 3 week difference in terms of harvesting between the coast (August) and the inlands (September). The most sought after terroirs are those located at the foothills of the mountains. These terroirs are better protected than the seaside, which is more disease sensitive, (for example Mildew), and are more favourable to organic cultivation.
Also, altitude is an important asset: the days are quite hot while the nights are rather cool. This helps to preserve the wines natural acidity and thus the freshness and ageing potential of the wines.

  2. Commanderie De Peyrassol lies in the heart of this Region. Can you tell our customers a little more about the Estate and why it is unique?
The Commanderie de Peyrassol’s exceptional location, its centuries-old history and the care given to the vines all contribute to its uniqueness. With its 800 years of wine production, Peyrassol is one of, if not the oldest estate in Provence. It has helped spread wine culture in Provence. There has been only 3 owners: the Knights Templar, the Rigord family and now, Philippe Austruy. This is quite unusual and has enabled the perfect understanding of the terroir and vineyards management at Peyrassol.

The vineyards of Peyrassol is a mosaic of terroirs which are all part of a single plot that is undergoing organic conversion.
Located in the foothills of the Massif des Maures, Peyrassol’s vineyards are composed of 14 different grape varieties that each benefit from various exposure, soil compositions and many terraces with an altitude going up to 350m. All these assests combined achieve an ideal terroir for the wines produced by Peyrassol. Thanks to this diversity, we are able to produce wines with a defined style: rosé with great freshness, minerality and fresh fruit flavours.

Finally, owner Philippe Austruy is also very passionate about contemporary art, and has shared his passion by exhibiting over 90 exceptional art pieces, creating a very unique experience when visiting La Commanderie de Peyrassol’s Estate.

  3. Many Customers love drinking fresh styles of Provence Rose with aged styles gaining more popularity too. Can you tell us about the styles of Rose Wine Commanderie De Peyrassol produce?
To define in a few words the style of Peyrassol rosé wines: freshness, aromas of fresh fruits and minerality. It is a style best to be enjoyed as of now.
Nevertheless, each wine at Peyrassol still has its own personality; from a more fruit driven style as we can taste in Réserve des Templiers and La Croix, to a more complex style seen in Château Peyrassol rosé which offers a dense, fruity yet lively palate. They are best enjoyed in their young age while the Cuvée 1204, produced in limited quantities is aged and offers additional complexity.

  4. When talking to consumers, what food pairings would you recommend matching your Rose wines too?
Provence rosé wines are wonderful on their own. They are also a fantastic companion to spicy cuisine (Provencal style with garlic, tomatoes and spice), exotic dishes, fresh seafood (prawns, lobsters), a fish tartare or ceviche and even a BBQ with grilled white meat or spicy sausages.

  5. When would you encourage customers to drink Peyrassol Rose Wines?

The rosé wines from Peyrassol are the perfect summer drinks thanks to their refreshing touch, elegance and fruitiness. They also have become very popular to enjoy during winter too, on a crisp, cool day or whilst staying at a ski resort.
All you need is a sunny day, whether it’s warm or chilly and Peyrassol’s Rose Wines will be the perfect bottle to open, share and enjoy. Cheers!

Did you know?

Provence is the birthplace of rosé wine. Vines existed in Provence before the Greeks arrived in 600 B.C., however it was first the Greeks, followed by the Romans, who introduced systematic growing and pruning techniques to Provence. After the whole fall of the Romans Empire, monks were actually the ones who kept winemaking traditions alive from the 5th to the 12th Century A.D., producing wine in order to fund their monasteries.
